The Student Senate of California Community Colleges General Assembly was active as the 81 delegates from community colleges across the state gathered to discuss the issues affecting their schools, debated resolutions concerning those issues, and voted on positions that advocate on behalf of the California Community Colleges’ student bodies.

Held in San Jose from Nov. 4-6, the bi-annual General Assembly held breakout sessions on Nov. 4 covering everything from student success, transfer and Disabled Students Programs and Services issues to effective resolution writing.

Various special interest meetings ran late into the evening and student leaders formed caucuses throughout the weekend to advocate on behalf of issues that are underrepresented or required stronger support across the board.

The SSCCC is comprised of 10 regions across the state with Golden West College being a member of Region 8. Each region meets once a month to address the issues their constituents feel are vital to the future of education, tour each others campuses, and participate in bonding activities.

Highlights of the weekend included a keynote speech by State Chancellor Jack Scott on the Student Success Task Force recommendations. The task force was formed earlier this year as a result of state legislation passed last year to address the low completion rates of community colleges in the state.

Cypress College political science professor and author of the Tax Oil to Fund Education initiative, Peter Matthews, received an enthusiastic welcome as he addressed the assembly concerning Proposition 1481.

He also detailed how an oil extraction fee could pump 3.7 billion dollars annually back into California’s endangered education system with approximately 1.7 billion directed towards the California community college system.

“Where the students lead, the leaders will follow.” Matthews said. The SSCCC voted 79-2 in support of the initiative.

Golden West College will publicly host the Jan. 27 Region 8 meeting in the Student Activities Conference Room at 2 p.m.
