The Rustlers women’s volleyball team hasn’t lost a game since Sept. 28 and the Oct. 14 matchup against the Orange Coast Pirates didn’t break the trend as they won their sixth consecutive match. Despite a slow start, GWC overcame a loss in the first set to win three consecutive sets and secure the victory.
Following the victory, Golden West is now 5-0 against the Orange Empire conference. The Pirates were off to a strong start with four straight wins in conference but GWC handed OCC it’s first conference loss of the season and their second loss overall.
“Team work and communication are the reasons we’re winning,” said Cassie Pugh. “We’ve grown as a team, and pulled it together.”
The Rustlers didn’t breeze past the competition as they struggled early. GWC lost the first set 25-19. “We started off really, really rough,” said Pugh. “When we got on it, we really got on it.”
The green and gold bounced back in the second set winning 25-18. They continued with the momentum in their favor winning set three, which proved to be the fiercest and toughest game of the match. The Rustler women finally pulled away with the victory of the set by the score 28-26.
In the fourth and final set Golden West won another close set 25-22. With the win the Rustlers improved to 10-3 overall in the season and became the sole undefeated team in the Orange Empire conference.
The Rustlers will next travel to face the Fullerton Hornets (10-2) conference rivals at 6 p.m. on Oct. 19 and then host the Riverside Tigers (8-7) on Oct. 26 at 6 p.m.
