Golden West women’s soccer failed to maneuver around Cypress College’s strong defense in a 2-0 defeat Friday at Cypress.

The Rustlers, who have been having a roller-coaster season, allowed the ball to stay on its side of the field through the first half. In return, Cypress scored both of its goals during the first twenty minutes of the game.

Candice Holt, a sophomore mid-fielder, helped corner the Chargers’ defense at times. Her speed overwhelmed the Chargers, stopping them from scoring any other goals in the second half. Holt’s corner kick nine minutes into the first half seemed to be as close as GWC would get to scoring; however, Cypress’s goalie quickly caught it.

After halftime, the Rustlers came back refocused, but their momentum quickly dwindled down. In the second half Jessica Fisher chest bumped the ball which bounced and went right between Cypress’s Cassidy Molen’s legs. From there, Katy Swart took control, but narrowly missed the goal.

GWC’s loss comes on the heels of a 3-0 win against the Santa Ana College Dons at Santa Ana. Katie Fosmire scored two goals for the Rustlers –– one off an assist from Holt from outside of the box to the far post. During the second half, Natalie Diaz scored a corner header goal for GWC off an assist from Fosmire.

Women’s soccer now stands at 4-4-1 in conference. The loss to Cypress puts them fifth in the Orange Empire Conference behind Santa Ana.

The Rustlers will face Riverside City College at Golden West on Friday, Oct. 21.
