Men’s volleyball team upsets Orange Coast

Last week the Golden West College continued its .500 pace with a loss to rivals Orange Coast College, and a quality win over Pacific Coast Conference foe San Diego City College.

The green was out in support of the Rustlers and for St. Patrick’s Day last Wednesday when OCC rolled onto campus. Unfortunately luck didn’t swing in the Green and Gold favor and they fell to the Pirates in four games, losing by a score of 30-25, 25-30, 30-25, and 30-23.

Outside hitter Brad Hemmerling of Orange Coast, was too much for GWC to handle as he was able to find every hole in the Rustler defense. Hemmerling completed the night with the game high in kills, slamming over 20.

Fortunes turned for Green and Gold two days later as they made a long road trip to face off against conference opponent San Diego City College. Beside for a hiccup in game two, the Rustlers managed to fend off SDCC, winning the match by a score of 32- 30, 18-30, 30-26, and 30-28.

What GWC men’s volleyball really needs is a steady winning streak to prove their worth in their conference. Since the semester began the Rustlers are holding a record of 4-5.

The Rustlers turn their attention to Palomar College on Wednesday March 24, and return home Friday night for a match against Grossmont, who the Rustlers defeated earlier this year.
