While many music fans brave the desert heat and flock to Coachella, Golden West College students enjoyed the 5th annual Battle of the Bands. The competition was held on Thursday, April 12 at the Starshower Amphitheater.

This year six bands entered the contest, in hopes of getting their hands on the $500 prize purse. The event couldn’t have been held on a better day, the sun was shining and the tunes were rocking.

Each of the bands had a very unique sound and performing style, and the music ranged from mellow rock, to an interpretive bongo jam filled with exotic noises and dancing.

However, at the end of the day it was The Short Term Melody that took home the prize. The band consists of Allen Morris, Alec Giel and Mike Hoang. The trio have been friends since their days at Pacifica High School in Garden Grove.

“We practice one to two times a week,” said Morris, “we are mostly influenced by 90’s alternative rock and blues.” The band performed first and quickly proved to be a tough act to follow.

Christy Nguyen, Associated Students of Golden West College activities commissioner, helped to organize the musical event and described the end result as a “success.”

Students that missed the event can watch the winners perform  here at GWC on April 24, in celebration of Earth Day.
