Arts & Entertainment, What’s up Feb. 24-March 9

Last Chance: Based on the Academy Award nominated film based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel of the same name, Oprah Winfrey presents “The Color Purple” is a Tony Award winning Broadway musical.  Chronicling the struggles of an African American family from the turn of the century through 1949, “The Color Purple” has an all star cast featuring American Idol winner Fantasia Borino as the lead role of Celie. This weekend will be its final run at the Pantages Theatre.

Tribute to a Fallen Soldier: The Cohiba Nightclub and cigar lounge is having a Tupac tribute concert this Thursday, Feb. 25. Performers include Long Beach’s own Crooked I, Tupac’s protégés Outlawz, and the greatest rap group living Dead Prez. Tickets are 20 bucks and the party starts at 8 p.m.

Bat S@#! Crazy: Because America can’t get enough senseless violence. “The Crazies” is essentially about a small town whose inhabitants are infected by some kind of toxin that turns them into savage cold-blooded killers. My guess is that the twist is the people really went crazy because they live in Ogden Marsh, Iowa. Some theatres such as the AMC 30 at the block feature a midnight premier of the film Thursday, Feb. 25 and it opens nation wide Friday, Feb. 26.

Ballin’: For those of you wanting to get up close and personal with senseless violence, and  have an extra $200 lying around Ron Artest is back in town. The Lakers are back at the Staples Center this Friday Feb. 26 going against the Philadelphia 76er’s. Somebody please throw something at Artest, it’s been too long since the last sports brawl.

In Stores Now: Punk rock cult legends Alkaline Trio are back with their 7th studio album titled “This Addiction”. Featuring the Ramones-esque title track, “This addiction” is the bands first release on their imprint Heart & Skull.
